Standby Buster - Press Release

IVY ENERGY SAVING LAUNCHES STANDBY BUSTER - AN ENERGY SAVING DEVICE DESIGNED TO HELP CONSUMERS SAVE MONEY AND THE ENVIRONMENT

  • Standby Buster is an electrical device that makes it quick and easy to turn off multiple appliances from standby mode
  • Standby Buster is the first device of its kind to be approved by the Energy Saving Trust

London, UK:  Tuesday 24th July 2007 – Ivy Energy Saving, a provider of industry-approved energy-efficient products, today announced the launch of Standby Buster – a remote-controlled electrical socket that lets consumers switch off multiple appliances completely rather than leaving them in standby mode.

It is estimated that leaving electric appliances on stand-by uses about 7% of all electricity in UK homes. That is equivalent to the electricity generated from two gas-fired power stations or from more than 1,500 wind turbines*.  With over 3.5 million tonnes of the principle greenhouse gas carbon dioxide (CO2)** being wasted by equipment left on standby each year, Standby Buster will help reduce this wasted energy consumption and in turn save consumers money.

Standby Buster requires no installation; the socket is simply plugged into an existing power outlet. Once plugged in, you can use the remote control to switch the power on and off, to any connected appliances. Sockets can also be grouped together into ‘zones’; each zone can be controlled by one of the four buttons on the remote.

Because Standby Buster uses Radio Frequency (RF) rather than Infra-Red (IR) to switch off products, it is not impaired by objects in its way; enabling consumers to control numerous sockets in different rooms throughout the house as well as equipment with plug sockets in hard to reach places, such as hidden behind TV cabinets, from just the one remote.

Before coming to launch with Standby Buster, Ivy Energy Saving worked closely with the Energy Saving Trust - the independent consumer advisory body on energy efficiency - to agree an industry standard for ‘standby’ products as none previously existed.  Standby Buster is therefore the first such product to market with an electricity consumption of less than 1 Watt and Energy Saving Recommended approval from EST - offering consumers an assurance of quality from a trusted source.

David ‘Doc’ Watson, Marketing Director, Ivy Energy Saving, comments; “Even for the best-intentioned people, being environmentally friendly is often seen as a time consuming, fiddly and expensive process.  Standby Buster offers the perfect compromise, helping consumers save money and the environment with all the ease of using a remote control to ‘unplug’ electrical equipment from any convenient location. And the best thing is, consumers don’t have to wait long to reap the financial rewards; with the money saved on their electricity bill a £14.99 Standby Buster starter pack could pay itself off within 6 months!”

Karen Lawrence Head of Advice at the Energy Saving Trust, commented: People are often surprised to find that about half of the UK’s carbon emissions come from energy that we use in our homes and day to day lives. We spend around seven per cent of our electricity bills on standby power at the moment and this is only set to rise – by 2020 about 45 per cent of our home electricity bills will be spent on running electronic products. So, make sure that appliances are switched off at the power button and, for those of us who need a bit of help, the Energy Saving Recommended scheme now accredits gadgets to help take the hassle out of saying goodbye to standby.”

About the Energy Saving Trust
The Energy Saving Trust is one of the UK's leading organisations set up to address the damaging effects of climate change. It aims to cut carbon dioxide emissions - the main greenhouse gas causing climate change - by promoting the sustainable and efficient use of energy.

The Energy Saving Trust is an independent, non-profit making organisation and acts as a bridge between government, consumers, trade, businesses, local authorities and the energy market. It provides impartial information and advice and has a network of advice centres in the UK specifically designed to help consumers take action to save energy.

About Energy Saving Recommended
Run by the Energy Saving Trust, Energy Saving Recommended (ESR) is an endorsement scheme that identifies the most energy efficient products on the market. Launched in 2000, our objective is to endorse the top 20% of energy efficient products so they become easily identifiable to consumers. To gain certification a product or service must meet with a strict set of criteria, independently set and updated annually.

There are now 2448 ESR products from 132 manufacturers available from 72 retailers. These include multiple, independent and online retailers. The logo can be found on home appliances (fridges, freezers, dishwashers, kettles and laundry products), Home entertainment (IDTVS, set top boxes, intelligent mains panels) and heating, glazing, insulation and lighting products.
